When burning a scented candle, you may find that it needs more attention than you realize to get the most out of the scent. Letting candles burn for an extended amount of time (typically over 4 hours) without trimming the wick can result in the candle wick blooming or mushrooming, smoking and tunneling, as shown below. All of which results in bits falling back into the wax, black smoke, and sooted candle rims, making the candle unsightly!
When the wick isn't trimmed the candle burns hotter and faster. However, trimming your wick allows the candle to burn cleaner, last longer and it maximizes the candles overall performance. Your can find wick trimmers online for as low $10. Get the most out of your candle!
Accidently cutting wick too Short
Fixing a wick that has been trimmed too short is easy to resolve. Light the candle for about 30 mins. Once a melt pool is formed, blow out the candle out and pour out the small pool of wax. This way, on your next burn, the wick will not be drowned out.
Burn Instructions for candle maintenance
Candle Care:
Keep wick centered and trimmed to ¼’’ with each burn
Place on temperature safe surface to avoid heat damage
Leave the candle lit at least 3 to 4 hours for the first time to avoid 'tunneling'
Do not burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time
Discontinue use when ¼’’ of wax remains
